The Famous Revelation Fountain at Chatsworth

6532_2403_art_1__81756.jpg Created by popular British sculptor Angela Conner, "Revelation" is the newest addition to the Chatsworth decorative garden fountains. In 2004/2005 she was commissioned by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth, in brass and steel, for the Queen’s 80th birthday. One of Chatsworth’s earliest ponds, Jack Pond, had “Revelation” placed in it in 1999. Alternatively concealing and displaying a golden globe at the sculpture’s center, the metallic water feature takes the shape of four large flower petals that open and close with the circulation of water. A steel globe decorated with gold dust was integrated in the sculpture, which stands five meters in height and five meters wide. This newest fountain is an intriguing addition to the Chatsworth Gardens because the petals’ movement is completely driven by water.

Vitalize Your Garden with the Aid of Feng Shui

When applied to your yard, feng shui design will draw its healthful energy into your home as well.

Size is not the primary factor when incorporating feng shui design to your yard. It is fabulous to have a huge space to work with, but do not worry if the area is small since you can still incorporate feng shui design.

The main feng shui tools can be used for your interior decor as well as your garden design. In order to learn the energy map, or bagua, of your garden, you will first want to understand your home’s bagua.

Before getting underway, make sure you grasp the five elements of feng shui so that you can optimize their energy.

An example of this is that Earth is the feng shui element you should have in the northeast part of your garden because that part of your garden connects to the energy of personal growth and self-cultivation. A Zen garden with some lovely natural rocks is ideal for that spot, as the rocks epitomize the Earth element.

Anyone thinking about including a water element into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).

Chatsworth and its Dazzling Cascading Water Fountain

The Cascade garden fountain forms a spectacular focal point to the gardens and is situated at the back of Chatsworth House. For 200 yards in direction of the dwelling is a collection of twenty-four irregularly positioned stone steps extending down the hillside. The Cascade, also completely gravity fed, is primarily based on a 17th century French design.

In 1696, this particular water fountain was built for the original Duke of Devonshire and has stayed the same ever since that time. At the top of the fountain, from which water flows downward, is the Cascade House. Underwater creatures in bas-relief decorate the outside of the house which is a small-scale building. Before proceeding down the Cascade, on special occasions water pressure to the Cascade may be boosted, causing the Cascade House to become an element of the Cascade display, as water circulates through ducts on its roof and from the mouths of its carved sea creatures. Providing a fantastic and comforting accompaniment to a stroll through the landscape, the slight contrast in size of each step signifies that the sound of the water cascading down differs as it falls along the Cascades. Back in 2004, Chatsworth's Cascade was chosen by historians at Country Life as the best water feature in England.

The Results of the Norman Conquest on Anglo Saxon Gardens

The arrival of the Normans in the second half of the 11th century irreparably improved The Anglo-Saxon lifestyle. The skill of the Normans surpassed the Anglo-Saxons' in design and farming at the time of the conquest. But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated design, and decoration until the Normans had overcome the whole realm.

Castles were more standard constructions and often constructed on blustery hills, where their tenants devoted both time and space to practicing offense and defense, while monasteries were large stone buildings, commonly located in the widest, most fertile hollows. The sterile fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of gardening. Berkeley Castle, potentially the most uncorrupted style of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists in the present day. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A monumental terrace serves as a deterrent to invaders who would try to mine the walls of the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and bordered by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.
