Determing the Ideal Place for Your Fountain

When you are deciding on a water fountain, make sure you give some thought to where you will install it. Any high-traffic spots such as driveways, entryways, or roundabouts are perfect spots to install one. a_538__01209.jpg

Some types of fountains are intentionally built to lean against a wall. Normally, they have something on the back of them like a hook or a bar with which you can use to affix them to a wall, post, or some other secure spot. Since the top part of your fountain is unstable on its own, make certain that it is secure against a wall to avoid damage caused by strong winds, wild animals, or other natural hazards.

The garden sculpture style, yet another possibility, is ideal for parks or any place people are inclined to hang out to enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

Ways to Introduce the Benefits of Feng Shui to Your Garden

Integrating feng shui design into your yard will help spread its energy into your home and your life.

As far as the size of your yard goes, it is not especially important when introducing feng shui design to it. It is great to have a huge space to work with, but do not worry if the area is small since you can always introduce feng shui design.

Whether you are introducing feng shui design to your home or garden, the approaches are the same. The first part is to figure out the bagua, or energy map, of your home, as your garden’s bagua will be an extension of that.

There are five elements in feng shui theory, and you should understand how to use each of them to maximize the energy.

An example of this is that Earth is the feng shui element you should include in the northeast section of your garden because that part of your garden connects to the energy of personal growth and self-cultivation. Since rocks symbolize the Earth element in feng shui, you might think about putting some into a peaceful Zen garden in the northeast corner of your yard.

People thinking about adding a water feature into their garden should place it in one of these feng shui areas: North (career & path in life), Southeast (money and abundance), or East (health & family).

Anglo Saxon Grounds at the Time of the Norman Conquest

The advent of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century substantially altered The Anglo-Saxon ways of living.

The Normans were better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and decoration until the Normans had conquered the whole realm. Most often constructed upon windy summits, castles were fundamental constructs that allowed their occupants to spend time and space to offensive and defensive schemes, while monasteries were rambling stone buildings generally installed in only the most fecund, extensive valleys. The serene practice of gardening was not viable in these dismal bastions. Berkeley Castle is possibly the most unchanged model in existence today of the early Anglo-Norman form of architecture. The keep is reported to have been created during the time of William the Conqueror. A monumental terrace serves as a deterrent to intruders who would attempt to mine the walls of the building. On one of these parapets is a scenic bowling green covered in grass and enclosed by an aged hedge of yew that has been designed into coarse battlements.

The Dispersion of Water Feature Design Technology

The published reports and illustrated publications of the day contributed to the evolution of scientific technology, and were the primary methods of transmitting practical hydraulic information and fountain suggestions throughout Europe. An unnamed French water fountain developer came to be an internationally celebrated hydraulic innovator in the later part of the 1500's. With imperial mandates in Brussels, London and Germany, he started his career in Italy, building expertise in garden design and grottoes with integrated and ingenious water hydraulics. “The Principles of Moving Forces”, a guide that became the essential text on hydraulic mechanics and engineering, was composed by him towards the end of his lifetime in France. Modernizing vital hydraulic findings of classical antiquity, the publication also details modern hydraulic technologies. As a mechanical means to move water, Archimedes devised the water screw, key among crucial hydraulic discoveries. Sunlight heated the liquid in a pair of undetectable containers adjacent to the beautiful fountain were shown in an illustration. Activating the fountain is heated water that expands and ascends to close up the conduits. The publication furthermore mentions garden ponds, water wheels, water feature concepts.

The Original Public Water Fountains

As originally conceived, fountains were designed to be practical, directing water from creeks or reservoirs to the residents of towns and settlements, where the water could be utilized for cooking food, cleaning, and drinking. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was necessary to pressurize the movement and send water squirting from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the later half of the nineteenth century. Inspiring and spectacular, prominent water fountains have been designed as monuments in nearly all civilizations.

The contemporary fountains of modern times bear little resemblance to the very first water fountains. Simple stone basins created from nearby material were the very first fountains, used for spiritual purposes and drinking water. 2000 BC is when the oldest known stone fountain basins were used. The first civilizations that utilized fountains relied on gravity to force water through spigots. The location of the fountains was determined by the water source, which is why you’ll normally find them along reservoirs, canals, or streams. The Romans began building decorative fountains in 6 BC, most of which were bronze or natural stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. The extraordinary aqueducts of Rome supplied water to the eye-catching public fountains, most of which you can visit today.

A Few Simple Ways to Hang a Wall Fountain

Improve virtually any room with the addition of a wall fountain. A waterfall will bring a sensation of relaxation with the comforting sounds of moving water. People tend to hang wall fountains in any area where folks meet, but most commonly in entryways. Even though each model might have slight differences on how to mount it, the basic directions are the same for all. Bear in mind that different parts will need to be put together during assembly. It will be necessary to connect the pump and tubing, and the base will need to be attached to the top part. Be sure to review the instructions before starting to make sure it is done properly. Generally, it is fast and straightforward. Note, however, that the directions for your individual model can vary slightly. Another person can be useful to hold the wall fountain in the appropriate place so that you can mark the wall. The easiest way to make sure it is hung correctly is to use a level. Both the very top and the bottom should be marked. Wall features can be hung in more than one way. The first is to utilize screws which you slide directly into the holes on the back.

Another option is to place it on brackets you have secured to the wall. This last one is the more advisable way, particularly if your fountain is large. Make a spot on the wall where the brackets will best fit on your wall fountain. Use a drill to make the pilot holes on the wall for your drywall anchors. Gently hammer the anchors into your wall. Affix the brackets by ensuring they are level and then screwing them into the wall using a drill or screwdriver. Mount your wall fountain by securing it onto the brackets. Check to see that it is in the ideal position and secure on the brackets. Add water once the wall fountain is ready. Use sufficient water so that the pump is completely submerged. At this point plug it in and the water will start to circulate. The water should fill the basin to within one inch of the top. Be mindful not to fill it totally to the top or it will overflow when you switch off the pump. The water level will rise because it all settles at the bottom of the basin if not getting pumped. Whenever the fountain is too full, water can spill out and cause damage to the nearby area.

Chatsworth and its Stunning Cascading Fountain

At the back of Chatsworth House, the Cascade garden fountain creates a spectacular centerpiece to the landscape. Twenty-four irregularly spread stone steps reach down the hillside for 200 yards in the direction of the house. Entirely gravity fed, the Cascade too is modeled on a 17th century French layout. Remaining unchanged since its inception, this water fountain was originally created for the first Duke of Devonshire in 1696. At the top of the fountain, from which water runs downward, is the Cascade House. A compact building, the house is decorated on the external side with marine creatures in bas-relief. Before proceeding down the Cascade, on special occasions water pressure to the Cascade can easily be boosted, causing the Cascade House to become a part of the Cascade display, as water circulates through conduits on its roof and originating from the mouths of its carved ocean creatures. The size of each step was made slightly different and means that the sound of the water cascading differs as it falls down the Cascades, providing a wonderful and calming complement to a walk through the gardens. In 2004, Chatsworth's Cascade, was voted England's best water feature.
