A Real Roman Masterpiece: The Santa Maria Water Fountain in Cosmedin

Amazing discoveries of both Christian and pagan origin have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is mainly for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. Since the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was situated off the beaten track, it remained mostly obscure. Due to the fact that the nearby area was depressing and mostly abandoned, visitors were not particularly interested in visiting it. As part of a project to modernize the piazza outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to design a fountain. August 11, 1717 marked the date when construction on the church’s foundation began. Medallions bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown in the foundation following the consecration of the first rock.

California's Water Fountain Study and Results

Berkley, CA residents voted for a sugar-sweetened beverages tax in February 2014, the first of its kind in the United States. The objective is to have individuals drinking more water and other natural beverages by elevating the cost of soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. Attempts were made to find out the status of community drinking water fountains in both high- and low-income neighborhoods. By developing a mobile GPS application, experts were able to amass data on Berkley’s drinking water fountains.

Analysts then used US Census data to find out even more about the economic and racial elements that influenced the city. The two data sets were compared to figure out what class distinctions, if any, there were in access to operating water fountains. The study was able to determine the demographics of areas with water fountains, also noting whether the condition of the fountains was greater or worse in lower class neighborhoods. While the majority of the fountains were in working order, an astonishing number were revealed to be in a poor state of repairs.

Water Fountains: The Minoan Civilization

On the Greek island of Crete, excavations have discovered conduits of multiple kinds. These provided water and eliminated it, including water from waste and storms. The chief materials employed were stone or clay. There were terracotta pipes, both round and rectangle-shaped as well as waterways made from the same material. There are a couple of examples of Minoan clay pipes, those with a shortened cone shape and a U-shape which have not been observed in any civilization ever since. The water supply at Knossos Palace was handled with a strategy of terracotta piping which was put beneath the floor, at depths starting from a couple of centimeters to several meters. The pipelines also had other functions such as gathering water and channeling it to a main location for storing. Thus, these conduits had to be ready to: Subterranean Water Transportation: It is not quite understood why the Minoans needed to move water without it being seen. Quality Water Transportation: Considering the indicators, a number of scholars advocate that these pipelines were not attached to the common water delivery process, offering the castle with water from a different source.

Keeping Your Wall Water Fountain Tidy

Water fountains will keep working a very long time with scheduled cleaning and maintenance. Leaves, twigs, and insects very often find their way into fountains, so it is important to keep yours free from such things.

Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is prone to growing algae. Mix hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, or vinegar into the water to avoid this particular problem. There are those who prefer to use bleach, but that is hazardous to any animals that might drink or bathe in the water - so should therefore be avoided.

Every three-four months, garden fountains should undergo a decent cleaning. First you must empty the water. Then use gentle and a soft sponge to clean the interior of the reservoir. Feel free to use a toothbrush if needed for any smaller crevasses. Do not leave any soap deposits in or on the fountain.

It is highly advised taking the pump apart to better clean the inside and remove any plankton or calcium. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it much less difficult to scrub. Mineral or rain water, versus tap water, is ideal in order to prevent any build-up of chemicals inside the pump.

Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by checking on it every day - this will keep it in tip-top shape. Permitting the water level to get too low can cause damage to the pump - and you certainly don't want that!
